Guards fitted to machinery should be carefully designed, constructed and fitted to ensure that they:
- meet the safety reach distances as specified in BS EN 294:1992 Safety of Machinery: Safe distances to prevent damage zones being reached by the upper limbs, preventing access to hazardous areas
- are not heavy and awkward to use
- are sufficiently robust to withstand constant use
- are designed so that they do not themselves create other hazards
